CROUSEVILLE – Bessie M. Hersey, 99, died Sunday afternoon Oct. 9, 2005, at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. She was born Aug. 30, 1906, in Washburn, the daughter of Joseph H. and E. Bertha (Jewett) Roberts. She taught for many years as an elementary school teacher. She enjoyed all types of needlework. She was a former member of the Grange, at the age of 90 she was recognized by the State of Maine as a retired teacher; was the Grand Marshall in the Washburn Days parade in 2004, and held the Boston Post Cane for being the oldest person in Washburn; and was a pioneer member of the Framingham Heart Study. Bessie was a member of the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church and had played the organ for 20 years. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Lawrence J. and Victoria Hersey of Yorba Linda, Calif. and Orville H. and Carolyn Hersey of Somers, Conn.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; three sisters, Lillian Haines, Ida Moores, and Laura Avery. Relatives and friends may call 2 p.m. until time of service at the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church, Washburn. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Dorothy Matson officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Extension Cemetery, Washburn. Donations may be in her memory to the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church, P.O.
