PRESQUE ISLE – Bessie Sutherland Corey went to be with her Lord, Feb. 22, 2007. Bessie was born April 6, 1917, in Portage, to Lloyd and Vera Sutherland. She was the oldest of nine children. After graduating from Houlton High School, Bessie attended Normal School, which is now the University of Maine – Presque Isle. She married Kenneth George Corey, of Presque Isle, Nov. 9, 1937, at the parsonage of the United Baptist Church, which is now State Street Baptist Church. Shortly after her marriage, Bessie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and faithfully served Him at the church in Presque Isle and, after moving to the coast of Maine in 1955, at the First Baptist Church, Rockland. Her many friends from the two churches remember her hospitable spirit and willingness to teach, cook or serve in any capacity needed. Ken and Bessie returned to Presque Isle in 1989. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Kenneth; three brothers, Wayne, Bob and Jack; and sister, Joyce Sutherland Bragdon Bessie is survived by three sisters, Jean Sutherland St. Pierre of Ashland, Sandra Sutherland Porter of Ashland and Gail Sutherland of Presque Isle; one brother, Lloyd White Sutherland Jr. of Herndon, Va.; three children, Peter and Martha Corey of Bangor, Tim and Barbara Corey of Dunbar, Wis., and Lucinda Corey Boyd of Manchester, N.H.; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Bessie Corey is now with her husband who predeceased her 14 years ago, and is at rest and peace in the presence of her Lord, to worship and serve Him for all eternity. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at State Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Shaw officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle.
