ASHLAND – Charles Frederick “Freddy” Orcutt, 89, died Nov. 22, 2004, at a Presque Isle nursing home. He was born in Ashland, Sept. 9, 1915, the oldest son of Willard R. and Georgie B. (Brooks) Orcutt, Sr. He was educated in Ashland area schools and was a 1932 graduate of Ashland Community High School. Freddy became a Master Mason in Pioneer Lodge No. 72, AF & AM in May of 1944. He had the distinction of being the most Senior Past Master with 60 years of being a Master Mason. He worked for Snowman’s Filling Station for many years where he drove a fuel truck delivering gas and heating oil to customers in all the local towns. He later went to work as a truck driver for Great Northern Paper, and was shop foreman in Sheridan until his retirement in 1977. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who liked everyone and everyone liked him. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was always willing to help anyone, no matter what they needed or what time of day. After raising their own children, at the young age of 53 he and his wife, Mary took up the task of raising two small infant grandchildren when their daughter and son-in-law died accidentally in 1969, caring for and raising them as their own children. He was well known around town for his doughnuts. He enjoyed cooking them and giving them away to different people and always brought some with him when he went to certain doctor appointments. Freddy was an avid reader, often boasting that he read almost every book in the town library. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying many weekends away with friends at one of their camps. The annual Memorial and Labor Day weekend camping trips were among his most favorite times. Later in his retirement he started touring the county and there was not a road in Aroostook County that he had not been on at least once. Every afternoon was a time for a ride regardless of the weather conditions. If one wanted to visit with him, you had to show up before noon or you would miss him. Freddy is survived by one daughter, Linda Lawrence of Columbia Crossroads, Pa.; one granddaughter, Gayle (Lawrence) Krise and her husband, Kenny; five grandsons, Michael Ball of Presque Isle, James Ball and his wife, Jennifer, of Ashland, Glenn Lawrence and his wife, Jessica, of Warren Center, Pa., Christopher Lawrence and his wife, Lisa of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Michael Littlefield and his wife, Rose Marie of Evans Mills, N.Y.; 13 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Bobby, Megan, Stephanie, Bryttani, Teresa, Rachelle, Matthew, Grant, Julia, Madison, Elizabeth, Moriah; several nephews and nieces. He will also be remembered by a special friend and riding companion of more than 14 years, Jane McGowan and her dog, Fritz. Freddy will be missed as well by his special snacking buddy, Nipper. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Mary Rose (Stevens) Orcutt; a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Ronnie Ball; a son-in-law, Philip Lawrence; a brother, Willard R. Orcutt Jr.; and a sister, Marjorie (Orcutt) Coffin. At his request there will not be any calling hours or funeral service; the family will honor and respect his last wish. There will be a graveside committal service at a time to be announced next spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ashland Community Library, P.O. Box 639, Ashland, ME 04732. A service of Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland.
