FORT FAIRFIELD – Capitola L. (Sprague) Mitchell, 89, died Friday morning, Dec. 17, 2004, at a Presque Isle nursing facility. She was born Dec. 27, 1914, at Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Stephen L. and Mattie (Shorey) Burtchell. She graduated from the Fort Fairfield High School in 1932, and was married to Jack Sprague on Dec. 7, 1932. Capitola and Jack were married for 33 years and had five children. She was married to Clark Mitchell in 1975. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. Capitola began working outside the home later in life, having been employed by the Town of Fort Fairfield for several years as the town clerk. After retiring, Capitola enjoyed camping during the summer with friends from Canada and traveling to Florida in the winter. For several years, Capitola was an active member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fort Fairfield, where she enjoyed singing in the church choir. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by both of her husbands; two brothers, Ludrick and Luther Burtchell; one sister, Loana Walls; one son-in-law, Charles E. Tarvin. She is survived by three sons, Claude L. Sprague of Lithonia, Ga., Gordon E. Sprague and his wife, Solange, of Fort Fairfield, Jack E. Sprague and his wife, Michelle, of Cape Elizabeth; two daughters, Audrey C. Tarvin of Marietta, Ga., Cynthia R. Beaulieu and her husband, Gerald, of Fort Fairfield; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 12-1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 166 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Capitola’s family extends a sincere thank you to the Presque Isle Nursing Home for their wonderful and compassionate care.
