ENFIELD – Carl R. Laing, 94, husband of Hattie (Faloon) Laing, died Aug. 16, 2006, at a Bangor health-care facility. He was born July 31, 1912, in Enfield, the son of Roscoe and Georgia (Darling) Laing. Carl graduated from Howland High School in 1930. He worked at his father’s store until May 1944, when he began serving his country in the Army until 1946, in World War II, serving in the European Theater, where he earned the Purple Heart for wounds received while in Germany. Upon returning home, he went to work as an electrician for Atlas Plywood and Northern Kraft, a part of St. Regis Paper Co. He was called back into the military for a few months during the Korean War. Carl was transferred to St. Regis Paper in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1953. He was a member of the Highland Baptist Church for many years, where he counted money and served as maintenance man. He was also treasurer of the METRO North Federal Credit Union for 17 years. Carl attended the Jones Business School, where he took courses in taxes. He was a member of Composite Lodge AF & AM of LaGrange, receiving his 50-year pin in 1996. He was also a 50-year member of the IBEW No. 983 and joined the American Legion in Howland in 1946. Carl was a life member of the Grange, having joined back in 1926. He worked at Clay Funeral Home for many years. Carl always had a sunny disposition and put a smile on many faces throughout his lifetime. He was commander of the American Legion in 1951 and County Commander in 1952. Carl was a member of the Howland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Hattie (Faloon) Laing; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln, with a Masonic service 7 p.m. that same evening. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Alan Porter officiating. Interment will be at Enfield Village Cemetery.
