BELFAST- Carolyn E. Cross, 87, of Searsmont, died Feb. 28, 2006, at a local healthcare facility. Born Dec. 30, 1918, in Brooks, she was the daughter of George and Ella (Bowden) Ellis. She married Frederick R. Cross Sr. Sept. 14, 1938, in Belfast and resided in Searsmont with him until his death in 2004. She then moved to Harbor Hill Assisted Living in Belfast. Carolyn was a school bus driver in Searsmont, worked in manufacturing and retail in local stores for many years and was a waitress at Whitcomb’s Restaurant in Belfast. She enjoyed knitting and gardening, particularly flowers and sold her vegetables and flowers with her husband, Fred to the public. Carolyn was active in the Searsmont Couples Club, the Tri-Town Snowmobile Club and the Honesty Grange in Morrill. She was a 4-H club leader, an honorary member of Pi Rho Zeta Sorority and a 50-year member of the Rosewood Chapter of the Eastern Star. She attended the Morrill Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Frederick; three sisters, Sadie Knowlton, Georgia Brierley and Avis Jackson; and a grandson, Frederick R. Cross III. She is survived by her three children, Frederick Cross Jr. and his wife, Jean, of Salem, N.H., Lois Peipho and her husband, Karl, of West Springfield, Mass., Bonita and her husband, John Staples, of Swanville; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, whom she adored, as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation hours will be held 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 3. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Rackliffe Funeral Home. Carolyn’s grandson, the Rev. John Barber of Holden, Mass., will be officiating the service. Burial will be in the spring at Grove Cemetery, Belfast.
