NASHUA, N.H. – Carolyn G. March, R.N., 97, of 31 Berkeley St., Nashua, died Saturday morning, Sept. 27, at the Courville at Nashua, after a brief illness. Mrs. March was born Oct. 31, 1905, in Clifton, the daughter of the late Vernon and Annie Mae (Crosby) Grant. She was the wife of the late Dr. Luther A. March, a Nashua physician, who died March 30, 1978. They were married in Boston, Mass., on Feb. 21, 1930. She graduated from Bangor High School with honors in 1922. Mrs. March taught school for a year before entering the Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing, where she was the youngest student to ever graduate as a registered nurse. She graduated first in her class at nursing school in 1926. While working as a registered nurse at Eastern Maine General Hospital, she finished her career there as the youngest nurse supervisor of the orthopedic department. Mrs. March ran the Red Cross Blood Bank drawings for several years, volunteered for the White Cross during World War II, preparing bandages and first aid packages used during the war, and volunteered at Nashua Memorial Hospital. Active in civic organizations, Mrs. March was a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary at both Nashua Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. She was a member of the Nashua Women’s Club, the Kings Daughters Benevolent Association and the Nashua Historical Society. For many years, she volunteered at the Nashua Children’s Home and the Mount Hope School. A member of the First Baptist Church of Nashua since 1930, Mrs. March taught Sunday School for many years and enjoyed planning the annual Church Fair and other Church functions. She was a caring, loving mother, grandmother and friend to all. Mrs. March loved to read, cook, knit, share family traditions and spend time with family and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Ruth Anne March, who died in 1946; three sisters, Izora Grant, Gladys Willy and Grace Wakely; and two brothers, Hollis and Raymond Grant. Members of her family include her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn E. and Philip W. McCubrey of Nashua; a granddaughter and her husband, Debra S. and Alan Blannin of Hollis; two grandsons and their wives, Luther A. and Patricia J. McCubrey of Brookline and March O. and Anne F. McCubrey of Nashua; two great-grandsons, Charles P. and John L. McCubrey of Brookline; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service was held in the First Baptist Church in Nashua, N.H., on Thursday, Oct. 2.
