BAILEYVILLE – Donald H. Smith, 77, died unexpectedly Oct. 6, 2003, at his home in Baileyville. He was born Nov. 20, 1925, in woodland, the son of Herman G. and Margaret (Elder) Smith. Don graduated from Woodland High School, class of 1943. He was an Army veteran of World War II, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member and past commander of W.T. Wren Post No. 23 American Legion of Woodland and the Eagles Club of Brewer. He retired from the Georgia-Pacific Corp. after 45 years and was a member of their Quarter Century Club. Don enjoyed hunting, gardening, traveling, and looked forward to his morning coffee at the Legion and his Army reunions. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Jacqueline (Mehan) Smith in 1997, and two half sisters, Belva and Leola. Surviving are his children, David Smith of Winthrop, Darlene Smith of New Hampshire, Doug Smith and his wife, Lisa, of Princeton, Dorothy Muncey and her husband, Rick, of Lincoln, Dorene Elkins and her husband Paul, of Thorndike and Deborah Paradis and her husband, Glenn of Massachusetts; one sister, Dorothy Fickett and her husband, Carl, of Lincoln; a very special friend, Margaret Rainey; 10 grandchildren, Seth, Andy, Stacey, Connie, Kelly, Daniel, Rebecca, Adam, Megan, and Nicholas; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Alexis and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home in Calais by Pastor Rolfe Flood. Burial with military honors will follow in the Woodland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. At the request of the family, donations in his memory to “The Taps Fund” of the W.T. Wren Post No. 23 American Legion, P.O.
