CALAIS – Carolyn “Kiya” Mahar passed away Saturday, March 26, 2005, in Calais, with her sons and family by her side. She was born Dec. 30, 1943, in St. Stephen, N.B. She was the daughter of Dorothy “Jean” Archer and stepdaughter of Paul Archer. Carolyn grew up in Lubec, graduating from Lubec High School in 1962. She worked for a short time for the State of Maine before marrying and having her two children. She settled in Calais and raised her family and enjoyed life. Carolyn loved to cook and she truly loved her home. In recent years she loved to crochet and all her family and friends proudly wore the scarves that she would “whip” out for them. She loved “The Wheel” and her Canadian Soaps on Sunday morning, and could dance circles around most. In her younger years she loved to bowl, and won several competitions. She had a wide array of good friends and led an active life. Many of her son’s childhood friends would affectionately call her Mom. An invite to supper was always accepted and usually followed with quotes like “I wish my mom cooked this good.” As adults they would often stop by for a visit when they were in town, never forgetting that they were always welcome. Carolyn was predeceased by her mother and stepfather, Jean and Paul Archer; and a granddaughter, Ashley. She is survived by her two sons and their families, Arthur Stevens and his wife, Lisa, of Waterboro, and Kevin Stevens and his wife, Patty, of Biddeford; four grandchildren, Kristen and Lindsay Stevens and Kayla and Keith Stevens; a brother, Drew Case and his wife, Theresa, a sister, June Archer-Gillespie and her husband, Dana; three nieces and families, Crystal (Case) Carrier, Dana Gillespie Herzer and Keysha (Case) Clukey; and one nephew, Ryan Case. Carolyn will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. Her home was her haven and she welcomed everyone with a warm smile and cup of tea. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at May’s Funeral Home formerly Scott-Wilson in Calais.
