BANGOR – Celia M. Denke-witz, 89, died Oct. 6, 2003, at a local healthcare facility. She was born in Newport, Jan. 8, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Percis (Bubier) Matthews. She graduated from Newport High School. While living in Rhode Island, she met and married John Denkewitz and began a new life with John and his four children. In later years, Celia and John lived and worked in Southern California. Following the death of her husband, Celia frequently moved between Maine and California. She loved to travel and was always ready for a new adventure. Among her travels were vacations in Mexico, Nassau, Hawaii and Europe. Celia was lovingly called “Aunt” by her close knit cousins and became a special part of their lives. She is survived by her stepchildren, Dorothy “Tootsie” and husband, Maynard Downing of Dexter, Lizbeth and her husband, Caroll Buzzel of East Corinth, Patsy Folk of Oregon, John “Jack” Dennison of California; 15 grandchildren. Celia was predeceased by her husband, John; two brothers, Ora and Vance, and two infant sons, Bruce and Richard. Services will be held 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Stephanie Salinas, pastor of First Baptist Church, Bangor, officiating. Interment will be in Monrovia, Calif. Friends may call 4 p.m. until time of service Friday at Brookings-Smith.
