WHITNEYVILLE – Charles Albert Dowling Sr., 81, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility. He was born June 21, 1922, in East Machias, the son of Harry and Frances (Willegar) Dowling. He was a graduate of Machias Memorial High School. He worked for many years as a woodsman and on the log drives for St. Regis Paper Co. He also worked on the construction of Cutler Naval Base and Dow Air Force Base. His final job was in the maintenance department at University of Maine at Orono from 1963 until his retirement in 1984 as the head custodian. He was a resident at Bradford Commons in Bangor for many years. While there, he received the Jefferson Award for outstanding citizenship in his community. Charles was an avid hunter, Atlantic salmon fisherman, and he loved planting flowers. He is survived by his three children, Douglas Dowling and his wife, Darlene, of Harrington, Charles Dowling Jr. and his wife, Lynn, of Addison, and Shannon and her husband, Alan Hogan, of Kenduskeag; one sister, Blanche Pennell of Whitneyville; five brothers, Harold and his wife, Betty, of Jonesboro, Henry, Herbert and his wife, Pamela, all of Whitneyville, Edgar and his wife, Gail, of Buena Vista, Ga., and Harry and his wife, Peggy, of Milford, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by the mother of his children, Elizabeth; his second wife, Marie; and two sisters, Nellie Applegate and Bertha Hamilton. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m., Monday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias, where funeral services will be held 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, with Pastor Williams Holmes officiating.
