FRANKFORT – Charles M. Martin Jr., 83, husband of Arlene (Kingsbury) Martin, passed away Oct. 26, 2005, at his home in Frankfort, surrounded by his family. Charles was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Lamoine, the son of the late Charles Maine Martin and Zelma (Walker) Martin. He attended schools at Monmouth and Hampden Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines with Company C of the 806th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was a hard worker his entire life, spending most of his early life working in the woods. Charles also had various other jobs including; truck driver, mechanic, plowing snow for the towns of Hampden and Swanville and at Dow Air Force Base, longshoreman for Jarka and Sprague Enterprises, night watchman for the government tank farm in Searsport, self-employed farmer, construction worker and buying and selling salvage. In his late 70’s, he was still raking blueberries and was in the process of rebuilding a tractor before he took sick at the age of 82. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Arlene of Frankfort; six daughters, Linda Gregory of Kenduskeag, Sharon Fields and her husband, Wayne, of Frankfort, Rita Weaver of Frankfort, Marilyn Shaver and fianc?e, Stephen Newcomb, of Stockton Springs, Janet Howington of Sanford, Fla., Kathy Watson and her husband, Kevin, of Hermon; one son, Roger Martin and his wife, Valerie, of Frankfort; one sister, Betty Martin of Old Town; 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, several in-laws, nieces, nephews and many special friends. He was predeceased by one sister, Esther Bray; and four brothers, Alton, Richard, Morris and Donald Martin. The Family would like to thank Evelyn Dempsey P.A., of Winterport Family Medicine for her loving care during Charles’ illness. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday with Pastor Stephen A. MacLeod, pastor of the North Searsport United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be private in Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport.
