MILLINOCKET – Charles Paul Bonis, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at a local healthcare facility. He was born April 27, 1920, in Millinocket, the son of Paul and Pauline Bonis. He was a lifelong resident of Millinocket. Chuck graduated from Stearns High School, Class of 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve his revered country during World War II for five years. His Army career consisted mainly of attending dental school at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo., and service on the German-Austrian border. Upon his return from service, he became employed at Great Northern Paper Co. for 47 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Chuck was an athlete, having played football, basketball, and baseball throughout his school years. He played semi-pro basketball with the original “Emerson Pills” as well as on intramural basketball and golf teams during his army career. He was involved with others in planning and fostering creation of Little League teams in the Millinocket area, where he also coached the Tigers, one of the original teams. An avid reader and sports fan, he enjoyed the peace and quiet of his hometown community. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Catherine (Galvin) Bonis of Millinocket; and a most cherished daughter, Ann Catherine of Cambridge, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Rosalie Jamo of East Millinocket, and Margaret Bonis of Millinocket; a brother-in-law, Michael Provenzano of East Millinocket; a loving niece, Patricia McKinnon of East Millinocket; and several treasured nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son, John Charles; sister, Anna and her husband, Garfield Weed, of Herndon, Va.; brother, Stanley of Millinocket; brother, Joseph and his wife, Lila, of Fremont, N.H.; sister-in-law, Patricia Provenzano of East Millinocket; and brother-in-law, Nicholas Jamo of East Millinocket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.
