EAST MILLINOCKET – Chester “Gus” Powers, 86, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at an East Millinocket health care facility. He was born Sept. 14, 1920, in East Millinocket, the son of Scott and Sarah (Farrington) Powers. Gus was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific theatre. He attained the rank of sergeant, and participated in 13 landings and nine major engagements. For his heroism and injuries, Gus was awarded the Bronze Star and was a Purple Heart recipient. After his wartime service, Gus returned to East Millinocket and worked for Great Northern Paper for 30 years. He enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. Gus was nimble handed, and made his own fishing nets and wove many kinds of baskets, place mats, and other objects which he drew satisfaction from making. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lorena (Curtis) Powers of East Millinocket; three children, Raymond Powers of East Millinocket, Sally Hannan and her husband, Charles, of Baltimore and William Powers and his wife, Jackie, of East Millinocket; a brother, Calvin Powers and his wife, Shirley, of St. Louis; a sister, Violette Sambrook of Florida; four grandchildren, Charles and Scott Hannan and Samantha and Nicole Powers; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gus will also be missed by Fayette Austin of East Millinocket, who was thought of as a daughter. In addition to his parents, Gus was predeceased by a brother, Guy Powers; and a sister, Jane Lynch. Friends are invited to visit with the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bouchard – Lamson Funeral Home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29.
