SOUTHWEST HARBOR Christina Emerson Hunt passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, surrounded by her loved ones at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, after battling breast cancer for several years. Christina was born Nov. 26, 1944, in Portland. Her father, Emerson Snow Hunt, fought in France and Germany as an Army officer in World War II. Her mother, Christine (MacDonald) Hunt, was a homemaker and businesswoman. Christina grew up in Connecticut and also attended high school in Augusta and Bangor, before going to Beaver College, Pennsylvania. She married Lawrence DellaMattera before graduating, then moved to New Jersey to become a mom of three. After her divorce, Christina went back to school in Maine, gaining her Bachelor of Art part-time, commuting from Camden to Gorham every day. In May 1979, Christina met her husband-to-be, Peter Friend, in Portland, where he was visiting from England. Christina moved to Alaska, where she and Peter were married Oct. 20, 1981. She worked as a teacher and social worker until 1986, when she, Peter and her youngest son, Peter, moved to Seattle, where Christina was a fundraiser for Greenpeace. In 1988, after her children had grown, she lived in Cornwall, England, with her husband, managing bed and breakfast inns. From 1992 to 1996, she and Peter lived on houseboats in Amsterdam and managed two small hotels. After moving back to England, Christina and Peter became foster parents to Luke Johnson, whom they adopted in 2003. In November 2003, Christina moved back to Maine to be close to her children and grandchildren. She worked as a case manager for Special Children’s Friends, Ellsworth and an ed. tech at Tremont School until 2005. She is survived by her beloved husband, Peter Friend of Southwest Harbor; her mother, Christine Hunt of South Portland; her son, Ken DellaMattera and daughter-in-law, Dr. Julie DellaMattera; her grandchildren, Emerson and Allison DellaMattera; her daughter, Nancy DellaMattera and partner, Jack Christin Jr., of San Jose, Calif.; her son, Peter DellaMattera of Belfast; and her son, Luke Johnson of Southwest Harbor.
