PRINCETON – Clara Eunice Wheaton, 91, died peacefully Oct. 27, 2006, in the presence of her family at Calais Regional Hospital, after a brief illness. Born April 25, 1915, in South Gardiner, Eunice was the third daughter of George and Azelia (Phillips) Cottrell. The family relocated to Milltown in 1918. As a young lady, she played the piano and organ and taught Sunday school at their local Baptist church. She was an honors graduate of Calais Academy in 1932. Eunice married Arthur W. Wheaton in 1937 and moved to Princeton, where they raised their four children, Stanley N. Wheaton, Brenda E. Wheaton-Smith, Carole J. (Wheaton) Fitzpatrick and Kenneth V. Wheaton. Eunice loved flowers and at one time had her own greenhouse filled with prize-winning African Violets. She was awarded many blue ribbons and trophies for both her flower arrangements and homemade dolls. She regularly attended Princeton Baptist Church throughout the years, read her Bible each morning, crocheted beautiful afghans and worked on her crossword puzzles. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Eunice was predeceased by her husband in November 2001, three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her beloved sister, Lovina Cochran, 95, of Princeton; brother, Howard Cottrell, 87, of Calais; her children, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service to honor Eunice will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Princeton Baptist Church. Burial will be after at Waite-Talmadge Cemetery.
