MERRILL – Clayton A. Richards, 80, died Sept. 20, 2004, at Houlton. He was born June 22, 1924, in Oakfield, the son of Adelbert and Margaret (Pratt) Richards. Clayton was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II at Battle of the Bulge and Normandy, where he turned 19 and helped liberate Germany and was a member of 40th MM gun crew as a automatic weapons specialist, worked for B & A Railroad and in the woods. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nadine (White) Richards of Merrill; five children, Joanne Cushing of Merrill, Sharon Anderson of Oakfield, Eric Richards of Patten, Dale Richards of Standish, and Scotty Richards of Northport; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters, Irene Betchner of Oakfield, Sadie Carmichael of Littleton, Melvina DeMerchant of Portage, Kay Jones of Blue Hill, Lila Sargent of Florida, Milford Richards of Oakfield, and Clyde Richards of Corinth; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Clayton was predeceased by six brothers and sisters. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004 at Merrill Cemetery with the Rev. Marcel Daigle officiating.
