LEVANT – Cleveland Homer Bemis, 73, died Dec. 13, 2005, at a Bangor hospital following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 9, 1932, in Levant, son of Roscoe William and Chrystal Birdna (Homer) Bemis. Cleveland was a third generation farmer and meat cutter and for 33 years employed by SAD No. 23 as a bus driver and maintenance person. He was one of the original founders of the Levant Fire department and rescue squad and in the early 1960’s he was the civil defense director. Cleveland was a 47-year member of the Kenduskeag Lodge No. 137 AF & AM of Kenduskeag. Surviving are his loving wife, Nora (Overlock) Bemis of Levant; five children, Cleveland Bemis and his wife, Alison, of Winterport, Richard Bemis and his wife, Cathy, Nathan Bemis and his wife, Stephanie, Robyn Green and her husband, Robert, Mark Bemis and his wife, Melissa, all of Levant; 20 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Debbie Thayer and her husband, Frank, of Hermon; sisters, Edna Cole of Scarborough, Lois Jean Moore of Glenburn, Beverly Howard of Hampden and Pamela Adams of Levant. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife of 41 years, Shirley (McKay) Bemis; a sister, Elura Frost; and a brother, William. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where friends and relatives are invited to a Masonic Memorial Service 6:30 p.m., conducted by the officers and members of the Kenduskeag Lodge. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Brookings-Smith with the Rev. Rick Lambert officiating. Interment will be in the Waugh Cemetery, Levant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Bemis Plaza, Levant, following the service Saturday.
