CLINTON L. BEAL ‘BUDDY’ BEALS – Clinton L. Beal “Buddy”, 83, passed away peacefully March 10, 2007, at home. He was born April 15, 1923, on Beals Island, the youngest son of the late George F. and Emma S. (Woodward) Beal. A lifelong member of the Beals Advent Christian Church, he served as the men’s Sunday school teacher, was a deacon, and completed his service as elder. Buddy was also a member of the Gideons International for more than 20 years. During his youth, Buddy was an Eagle Scout and developed a love for the outdoors and the craft of boat building; discovered when he rebuilt the stern of his father’s boat at 17. After he graduated from high school, he worked as an apprentice for boat builder, Riley Beal, and did furnace and installation repair for Russell Rogers and Son General Store. Buddy was well known as a jack-of-all-trades and could build or fix just about anything. In 1954, he became the caretaker for Priscilla (DeForest) Williams on Head Harbor Island, summering there with his family throughout his life. In addition, he served Nathaniel and Priscilla Roe on Hall’s Island. In June 1956, his first lobster boat design, the White Stallion was completed and, along with the boat, the beginning of his boat building business was launched. Over his boat building career he completed more than 60 boats. Buddy was recognized by the Maine Boat Builders Hall of Fame in 1997. He was an instrumental force in creating the Jonesport-Beals Community School District, serving on the school board for more than three decades, including sitting as chairman for some time. Buddy also served on the Beals Town Planning Board. He was a storyteller, enjoyed reading, learning, the news, history and geography. He had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh and was known for teasing his loving wife. Buddy adored his family, his friends, his church, and his God. He was a loving and giving man and will be greatly missed. Buddy is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of more than 62 years, Lottie Beal; sons, Ray N. Beal and Dana L. Beal, all of Beals; grandchildren, Dana Clinton Beal and wife, Jennifer, of Gouldsboro, Carmen M. Kallgren and husband, John, of Woodstock, Conn., and Stacey P. Beal of Beals; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Anne Beal, Jacob Clinton Beal, and Clinton Daniel Kallgren; two sisters, Etta Kelley, and husband, Shirley, of Augusta, and Iona Woodward; many nieces and nephews; special friend and nephew, Ernest Libby Jr., and his wife, Myrtle; and Pastor George Woodward and his wife, Iris and family; many other friends and family. He was predeceased by his siblings, Eldon Beal, Eli Beal, Wandell Beal, Kathleen (Beal) Newcomb, Arnold Beal, Alfreda (Beal) Libby, and Ernestine (Beal) Alley. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Beals Advent Christian Church. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the church, officiated by Pastors Phil Barton and George Woodward. Burial will take place at Sewall Field Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for a time of fellowship with the family after the service at the church parish hall.
