COLBY C. ‘SEAWEED’ WEED DEER ISLE – Colby C. Weed, 75, died unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 26, 2003, at a Blue Hill hospital. He was born April 3, 1928, in Stonington, the son of Leon C. and Annabelle M. (Colby) Weed. Colby was a member of the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle, Marine Lodge No. 122 of Deer Isle for 54 years, and the Deer Isle Fireman’s Association, where he served as president from 1967 until 1982. Colby was also a member of the Deer Isle Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years. He served in the Army for a brief time before returning to Maine. After working at a garage and driving a truck for a period of time, Colby started his own excavation contracting business, which he continued to own and operate for more than 50 years. Colby knew and was known by many people, and will be remembered for his ability and love of telling a good story, sharing a joke, and sharing a conversation with all who knew him. He had an iron willpower, and had a strong determination not to give up to any obstacles which he faced. Colby is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly A. (Trundy) Weed of Deer Isle; two children, Rick Weed of Deer Isle, and Joni Wardell and her husband, Edward, of Orland; four grandchildren, Joshua and Jason Weed, and Sarah and Lucas Wardell; a former daughter-in-law, Kathy Weed of Deer Isle; four nieces, Cheryl Hypes and her husband, Danny, of Deer Isle, Wendy Fontaine of Blue Hill, Diane Billings and her husband, Arthur, of Deer Isle, and Linda Weed and her husband, Jerry, of Deer Isle; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends and business associates. In addition to his parents, Colby was predeceased by a son, Ronald Colby Weed; and a brother, Wilfred Weed and his wife, Myrna Weed. A Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle, Church St., Deer Isle. Private interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sunset.
