WINTERPORT – “C.R.” Carol Peck died of cancer July 5, 2007, in Winterport. C.R. enjoyed beekeeping, kayaking, walking with family and friends, and working in her beautiful rock and vegetable garden. She spent many hours appreciating nature, especially the beauty of tiny plants and animals. She was an avid swimmer, enjoying the Laura Hoit swimming pool, and completing the two-mile Beach to Beach swim for cancer last summer. C.R. grew up in Washington, D.C. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute of Art and her Master of Fine Arts from Kent State University. After moving to New York City, she was an artist during the 1970s, and showed her work at Soho 20 Gallery and other museums and galleries in the U.S. and Europe. She was retired as a teacher from New York City schools and also worked on the Arts for Homebound program. After moving to Maine in 1986, she was active in historic preservation as well as preservation of the environment. She worked for social justice and equality for all people. She was a member of the Tri-County Beekeepers Association, the Cove Brook Watershed Council, the Bangor Land Trust, Equality Maine, the Nature Conservancy, Maine Audubon, and the National Association for Historic Preservation. She was a former vice president of the Winterport Union Meeting House and supported the restoration of the building. All her loved ones and her community will miss her. She is survived by her life partner, Jeanine Crockett; and her animal companions, Mikkeli and Carson. She is also survived by her mother, Stella Peck; her brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Michele Peck; nephew, Warren Peck; niece, Heather Moishes; several great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral service will be held noon Sunday, July 8, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor, with Rabbi Darrah R. Lerner, of Congregation Beth El, officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. Relatives and friends are invited to a time of conversation and refreshments 3-5 p.m. at her home, 41 Kaler St., Winterport.
