STOCKTON SPRINGS Craig Kilgour Stevenson, born April 10, 1922, in Paisley, Scotland, passed away in the early hours of Oct. 31, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. As a teenager he attended agricultural school at the coaxing of his father, but his heart was in engineering and after one year he entered a mechanical engineering apprenticeship. Studying hard, he soon found himself serving on ships, first paddle steamers on the River Clyde, then on sea going vessels. He quickly rose to the rank of first engineer in the Merchant Navy, sailing to port in North Africa, the Middle East and the South Pacific during the War. After several years at sea, he secured a position with Lloyds Register of Shipping and remained there for the rest of his career. He moved his family to Calcutta, India, then to Bombay, India, all the time building a reputation as an exemplary engineer and a man not to be taken lightly. In 1959 he returned to Scotland, and in 1966 was transferred to the New York office, where he resided in New Jersey, for over 20 years. He was highly regarded by colleagues and clients world wide, overseeing major works on some of the world’s great ships, including the Queen Elizabeth II. In 1986 he retired to Maine, with his wife, Margaret. He was a simple man enjoying simple pleasures like gardening and reading, and was always an avid photographer. He craved social interaction and soon became involved with the Belfast Curling Club, where he created bonds of friendship, which lasted many years. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His family would like to thank the entire staff of Waldo County General Hospital, Seaport Family Practice, Dr.’s Richter’s, CancerCare of Maine and St. Joseph’s Hospital, for the kindness he received during the last few years of his life. No memorial service will be held, however his family will be gathered at this Sunday’s services at Sandy Point Congregational Church, Stockton Springs.
