SEAL COVE – David N. Elvin, 60, died quietly on Oct. 8, 2003, at a Bangor hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born Nov. 14, 1942, in Brunswick. David was the son of Kenneth and Doris (Moody) Elvin. From 1960-1963 David served in the U.S. Navy in Patuxent River, Md. Upon his discharge he and his wife, Nancy (Malone) Elvin, (from whom he was subsequently divorced) returned to Augusta to raise their family. He began his career in the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier, and then served as the Customer Service Representative and Postmaster of Richmond and Bar Harbor. Early in his career he became interested in community politics in Maine and was elected a City Councilman of Augusta from 1969-1975. In 1975, at the age of 33, he was elected Mayor of Augusta and served for two terms. Known for his kind and generous heart he lived his life with joy. It has been said of David that “Where ever he met a stranger, there he left a friend.” This was true even during his final days when he reached out to thank the loving staff at EMMC for their care. Along with public service he was passionate about food and enjoyed cooking for everyone who visited his home. He was famous for both his Saturday night baked beans and Sunday afternoon prime rib roasts. He also loved woodworking and helped build several homes in both Augusta and Mount Desert Island. He especially loved spending time with family and friends in a newly built cabin on Gott’s Island. He is survived by his family including his significant other and best friend, Katharine Thurston and Jennifer Thurston, 11 years old (for whom he and Katharine are legal guardians); his son, Andrew Elvin of Philadelphia, Pa.; his daughter, Susan Comstock and her husband, William, of Arlington, Mass.; a grandson, Noah David Comstock; his brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Judy Elvin of Penfield, N.Y.; his niece Kristen Clemenzi; his nephew, Michael David Elvin; and a great nephew, Adam David Clemenzi. A celebration of David’s life will be held 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Rock’s Edge, 147 Shore Road, Manset. At David’s request his family has planned a spring burial on Gott’s Island. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in David’s memory to The Children/Youth Programs at Harbor House, P.O. Box 836, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 or Tremont School Department, Drug and Alcohol Education, HC 33, Box 74, Bass Harbor, ME 04653.
