BREWER and BANGOR – Donald A. “Poppa” Smith, 88, a resident of Brewer for many years, died May 5, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. He was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Brewer, the son of the late John and Gertrude Smith. In life he enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing bridge. Donald was a graduate of Brewer High School, attended Higgins Classical Institute and the University of Maine. He was a well-known carpenter for many years. Donald was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the First Baptist Church of Bangor, St. Andrew’s Lodge No. 83 AF & AM of Bangor, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Bangor, Maine Consistory 32nd Degree and Anah Shriners. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Rachael A. and William F. Stocker of Green River, Wyo., Sharon L. and John C. Brimmer of Penn Run, Pa., and Brenda J. and John D. Cheney of Bangor; 11 grandchildren, Douglas, Scott, Jon, Michael, Joseph, Kimberly, Kristan, Candace, Karyl, Sara, and Kendra; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Patricia Grant of Bangor; a niece, and one nephew. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Leona and four sisters, Marion Glaster, Dorothy Norman, Marcia Smith, and Adele Smith. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2004 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Stephanie Salinas, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bangor officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., following the services Saturday.
