HOULTON and MONTICELLO Donald “Gramps” Cullins, 72, lost his battle with cancer Sept. 25, 2004. He was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Monticello, the son of Beecher and Beatrice (Cluff) Cullins. He began working on a farm at an early age to help his family. He worked for the Carter family in Monticello for many years, and there he learned the work ethic that he retained the rest of his life and tried to pass on to the next generation of farmers, “If you are going to do a job, take the time to do it right.” Farming was his love, and for the past 32 years he had worked for Albert Fitzpatrick, continuing to work the farming season from May through October although “retired.” Unable to work on the farm this year, he still enjoyed tending his garden and watching it grow. He will be greatly missed by his three sons and their families, Mark and Lisa Cullins of Biloxi, Miss., and their children Shannon, Shawn and Matthew, Beecher Cullins and Wendy Henderson of Littleton, Norman and Lynn Cullins of Littleton, and their children Jason, Holden and Michaela; and by his long-time companion, Sylvia Forte of Houlton, and her entire family. During his illness, he found great comfort in visits from his younger “grandchildren”, Michaela, Zachary, Benjamin, and his sons mother, Eveingeline Bates. He is also survived by his sister, Norma Slavinski of Florida; special nephew, Allison Ewings and his wife, Ruth; several other nieces and nephews; and his favorite dog, “Goldie”. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Lewis and sisters, Phyllis Hartley, Ruth Lane and Anna Ewings. Friends may call 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St., Houlton, where a time of Reflection will be held at 8:30 p.m. with the Rev. Randall Burns Officiating. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Aroostook, care of Bowers Funeral Home, PO Box 579, Houlton, ME 04730.
