BRUNSWICK – Richard F. Dutting, 81, of 25 Thornton Way, died at his home Sept. 23, 2004. He was born in Springfield, Mass., March 30, 1923, a son of George A. and Gladys Brown Dutting. After graduating from Winchester High School (Mass.), he went on to earn a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts College (1944) and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University (1961). In 1946, Mr. Dutting became City Engineer, Superintendent of Public Works, and Water Superintendent in Hudson, N.Y. In 1956, he joined Camp Dresser & McKee, a consulting engineering firm in Boston, and worked in the U.S., Turkey, Thailand, and Australia. In 1970, he co-founded Kleinschmidt and Dutting, a professional engineering partnership in Pittsfield. The company did work in the U.S. and Canada. He continued his work as Richard F. Dutting Associates, from 1985 to 1998. He moved to Brunswick in 1999. Mr. Dutting served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; the New England Water Works Association; Maine Water Utilities Commission; and First Parish Church, Brunswick. Mr. Dutting was predeceased by his wife and best friend, Carol Van Deusen Dutting in 1996; and his brother, Robert E. Dutting in 1965. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth DeSantis-Bickford and her husband, Lenny of Windham, N.H., David Dutting of Lancaster, Mass., Ruth Witte and her husband, Tony of Dansville, N.Y., Catherine Gottschalk and her husband, George III of Louisville, Ky., and Nancy Burnett and her husband, Gregg, of Holden, Mass.; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at First Parish Church, Maine St., Brunswick, with the Rev. Dr. Larry Kalajainen officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester, Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Parish Church, 9 Cleveland St., Brunswick or CHANS, Hospice Care, 50 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick 04011.
