AUGUSTA and ELLSWORTH Donald E. Roberts Sr., 73, died May 31, 2005, at Togus VA Hospital, Aug-usta. He was born Sept. 4, 1931, in Ellsworth, the son of Lorin Eugene and Persis (Brown) Roberts, both deceased. Donald served in the U.S. Navy. He attended S.U.N.Y. at Farmingdale, N.Y. and retired as a campus security officer. He enjoyed bingo, church and sing-a-longs, and in earlier years painting, fishing, and bowling. He founded an informal club “Chop Suey”, to hold foster unity. He is survived by his wife, June; son, Donald E. Roberts Jr.; daughter, Eva J. Roberts; sisters, Dolores Roberts, Katherine Conary; and brother, Lawrence “Larry” Roberts; many nieces, nephews and friends. He also leaves behind a caretaker who became a good friend, Dorien Dudley, and the many staff at the VA Hospital who helped care for him in his final years. Calling hours will be held from 5:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 8. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s memory may be sent to assist hospitalized veterans, VAVF-73, Voluntary Service Dept., Veterans Affairs, Togus VA Medical Center, No.1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330.
