OAKFIELD – Donald Joseph Lawler, 87, died May 12, 2004, at Houlton. He was born on March 9, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Maurice and Ellen (Riley) Lawler. Don was a decorated World War II veteran of the Philippine Liberation Campaign, a member of the VFW of Island Falls, a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Island Falls and a former member of the parish council. He worked for the town of Oakfield for 20 years in the maintenance dept., Aroostook County Deputy Sheriff and Oakfield Town Police officer for many years. Don enjoyed hunting in the Southern Oakfield hills and fishing and was an avid New York Yankee’s fan. He is survived by his wife, Atheline “Peggy” (Muir) Lawler of Oakfield; six children, Maureen Emery and her husband, Larry, of Newburgh, Joseph and his wife, Marguerite Lawler, of Smyrna, Theresa and her husband, Thomas Goff, Bonnie and her husband, Bryce Clark, all of Merrill, Christine and her husband, Gary Brewer, of Ludlow, Nancy and her husband, Walter Weymouth, of Charleston; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Susan and Geneive; nieces nephews and cousins. Don was predeceased by his parents; one son, Michael; and brothers, Thomas, John, Maurice Jr., and Martin; sister, Geraldine Jones and Mary Slauenwhite. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday May 16, 2004, at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Monday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Island Falls, with Father Eddy Morin celebrant. Interment will be in St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery.
