NEWPORT – Donald K. Brawn, 77, retired Chief of the Newport Fire Department, died unexpectedly Oct. 27, 2005, at a Pittsfield hospital. Don was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Newport the son of Harvard and Thelma (Sheridan) Brawn. He was educated in Newport Schools. He married Eudora Frazier, April 20, 1946, in Newport. Don worked for the Town of Newport Highway Dept. for several years, Dexter Shoe Company as a hand sewer for several years. He then was hired by Maine Water Company in Newport. Don worked to get his required certifications and became the superintendent of the Newport Water District when it was purchased by the district and retired in 1997, after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Newport Fire Department for more than 30 years and served as the chief of the department for 25 years retiring as an honorary chief. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and camping. He spent many happy days fishing on Wilson Pond with his wife and partner, Dody, who predeceased him June 29, 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara L. Webber of Detroit; six grandchildren, Randy McLaggan, Ronald McLaggan and his wife, Lisa, Allen Brawn, Darren Brawn and his wife, Liza, Eric Brawn, Danny Brawn; seven great-grandchil-dren, Sean McLaggan, Heather McLaggan, Dylan McLaggan, Taylor McLaggan, Stephanie Emery, Cody Brawn, and Casey Brawn. He will also be remembered by Sherry Busque, Vicky Gove, Frank Mountain, Mildred Coates, Ralph Elkins, Royce McLaggan, Donald White, Tammy McLaggan, Tammy Bowman and Jackie Nash. He was predeceased by his son, Dennis, in 1983; and also his brother, Harvard Jr. Graveside services with fire department honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Riverside Cemetery, Newport, with Pastor Al Worden officiating.
