HARRISONBURG, Va. – Donald L. Goodwin died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at his home. He was born Feb. 22,1923, in Brewer, the son of Galen L. and Ethel Mayo Goodwin. He attended Brewer schools, graduated from the University of Maine and did graduate studies at the University of Maine and American University, Washington, D.C. He served as a platoon leader in the 36th Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division in Germany during World War II. His work career began as a teacher and baseball coach in Bucksport in 1946. He accepted a federal government position in 1947 and served in several government agencies over the next 26 years, primarily with the U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. State Department. His major assignments with U.S. Agency for International Development were in Iran, Liberia and Vietnam. He retired from the Agency for International Development in 1974, with a Distinguished Service Award, for his work with refugees in Southeast Asia. After a period of consultations in the Middle East and Africa for the Agency for International Development, he was employed by the American Red Cross, as assistant director for Disaster Planning and Training in the Eastern Operation Field Office. He retired from the American Red Cross in 1985. He and his wife, Lillian (Dolly) Estes, were married Sept. 4, 1942, in Brewer. Their long life together was their joy and that of their family and friends. He is survived by his wife; three children, Larry K. Goodwin and wife, Rosemarie Straight, of San Diego, Judith A. Miller and husband, John F. Miller III, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Alan S. Goodwin and wife, Eleanor, of Rockville, Md.; grandchildren, Laura G. Winkler and husband, John Winkler, of Fairfax, Va., Gregory Goodwin of Flagstaff, Ariz., Jason Miller of Richmond, Va., Jennifer Miller of Kennesaw, Ga., Michael Goodwin and Christopher Goodwin of Rockville, Md.; and a great-grandson, Hunter Miller of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Howard Goodwin of Sun City Center, Fla., and the Rev. Robert Goodwin of Newton, N.J.; and one sister, Barbara Abusamra and husband, Ward Abusamra, of Kingston, R.I.; nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces. He was predeceased by sister, Mildred Wilbur and husband, Bernard Wilbur. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Strite Auditorium, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, Harrisonburg, Va., with Ben Burks, vice president of Life Enrichment of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community and the Rev. Jeff Butcher, of Otterbein United Methodist Church, officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be given to the Donald L. Goodwin Endowed Scholarship for the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, 1200 Park Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802. The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
