COLUMBIA, S.C. – Donald William Hayden, 63, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. Born June 17, 1944, in Bangor, he was a son of the late William and Mary Hayden. A graduate of Merrimack College, Massaschsetts, Mr. Hayden worked first as a chemist for Raytheon Corp. Later, in 1972, he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, and served as a special agent for offices in Buffalo, N.Y.; Baltimore, Md.; and Washington, D.C. He transferred to Columbia, S.C., in 1981, where he retired from the FBI in March 1995. After retiring, he went to work for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and then for the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, from which he retired recently in June 2007. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Mary; sons, Donald William “Jay” Hayden and his wife, Sonja, of Austin, Texas, Michael Patrick Hayden of Cincinnati, Douglas Joseph Hayden and Geoffrey Daniel Hayden, both of Columbia, S.C.; daughters, Melissa Anne Hayden of Columbia, S.C., and Mary Hayden Hawkins and her husband, William Hawkins III, of Lexington, S.C.; granddaughter, Alexandra Laurel Hayden; sisters, Roseanne Brooks of Orrington, Bonnie Murphy of Miami, Miriam Davis of Bangor, Margaret Hayden of San Diego and Michelle Brogden of Mount Vernon; and brother, David Hayden of Brewer. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
