MACHIAS – Eleanor Worcester, of 6 Free St., died peacefully Jan. 7, 2008, surrounded by loving family, at Downeast Community Hospital after a long illness. She was born May 21, 1931, in Machias, the daughter of Michael and Nellie Cox Holland of Whitneyville. She graduated from Machias Memorial High School and worked as a secretary for the superintendent of schools until her marriage. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John; a father and mother, Michael and Nellie Holland; three bro-thers and a sister, James, John, Charles and Joyce. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sharon Worcester of Jonesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Opal and Steve Apsega of Ellsworth; a sister, Nancy Holland of Whitneyville; five grandchildren, Stephen Apsega and wife, Glenna, of Orrington, Laurie Harnish and husband, Tom, of Hermon, Jared, Cassandra and Caroline Worcester of Jones-boro; two great-grandsons, Kinnon and Brennon Apsega of Orrington; one great-grand-daughter, Lauren Harnish of Hermon; special nephew, Chris Holland and wife, Stephanie and son, Bryce; many nieces and nephews; and two dear, lifelong friends, cousin, Ellen Look and Dot Whitney of Jonesboro. For many years, the Worcester home was a place where family, friends and animals were always welcomed and nurtured. Eleanor will be remembered for her intense love and devotion to her family, her incredible sense of humor and her kindness to any living creature lucky enough to cross her path. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
