HOWLAND – Doris (Dyer) Estey died early Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Cummings Healthcare in Howland. Doris was born Sept. 20, 1912, in LaGrange, daughter of Marcel N. Dyer and Lotta A. (Lancaster) Dyer. Doris lived in Lakeview and LaGrange, New York, and Medford Center. She was educated in LaGrange schools, graduated from LaGrange High School in 1930, the Brooklyn (N.Y.) School of Nursing where she was trained as an R.N., and the University of Maine in the College of Education. She worked as a nurse at Glen Cove Community Hospital in Long Island, N.Y., returned to Milo where she worked at the Milo Community Hospital and for a time as a teacher in the Bradford, Seboeis Plantation and West Enfield schools. She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Hollis Dyer; sisters, Aileen D. Dudley and Mildred D. Doble; and her husband of 50 years, Hubert C. Estey. She is survived by her sister, Myla D. Treadwell of Glenburn; her brother, Marcel N. Dyer Jr. of Bangor; her daughter, Diana L. Estey of High Point, N.C.; and her son and his wife, Paul and Dianne Estey of Bangor; a grandson and his wife, David and Katherine Estey; and a grand-daughter, Karen Estey; and many nieces and nephews. Doris was a charter member of the Milo Nurses Guild, a 55-year member of the Coldbrook Grange No. 436, and a member of the Howland Christmas Club. She loved to read, knit, crochet, quilt, embroider and do crafts of every kind. She had a green thumb and loved to grow flowers of every kind. She was known for sending cards for every occasion and will be fondly remembered for her raised donuts, biscuits and holiday fruitcake. A special thanks to the staff at Cummings Healthcare in Howland and special friends, Dale and Christine DeWitt and their children, who meant so much to her. Doris was a caring person who believed in sitting with people when they were ill. Her children knew that if they went to bed sick they could be sure they’d see her there when they woke and knew she’d be there for them until they were well. She was a gregarious, warm-hearted and generous lady of keen wit who will be much missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maine Lung Association, the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced later.
