PORTLAND – Dorothy D. Jackson, 95, of Portland, formerly of Monson and Florida, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Auburn. She was born, Portland, the daughter of Maurice B. and Albina Boivin Durgin. Dorothy attended parochial schools and was a 1928 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy. She studied nursing at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, graduating in 1937 as a registered nurse. In 1941, she married Oliver Dalton Jackson in Massachusetts. After a year in Portland, they moved to Monson. After her husband’s retirement in 1972, Dorothy and Oliver spent winters in Florida and summers in Maine. For the past few years, she was a resident of Portland and recently lived at The Woods at Canco. Dorothy was an active participant in local activities. In Monson, she helped establish a childcare clinic and provided help to the local nursing home. She also served as a member and past president of the Monson Women’s Club. Dorothy volunteered many hours to the various churches where she worshiped and enjoyed square dancing, choral singing and many craft activities. She traveled to Croatia, Mexico, Ireland, Nova Scotia and Jerusalem. In the mid 1990s, Dorothy and her brother, Maurice, built a small cabin on East Grand Lake, Forest City, where she enjoyed many summers until she died. She was predeceased by her husband, Oliver in 1994; and two brothers, Maurice B. Durgin Jr. and Austin G. Durgin. Survivors include two daughters, Marie K. Welsh and her husband, Richard, of Medfield, Mass., and Linda S. Jackson-Washburn and her husband, Guy, of Greene; a grandson, Richard Christopher Welsh of Medfield, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Durgin of Hanover, N.H.; six nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at Holy Martyrs Church, Route 88, Falmouth. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Falmouth.
