BAR HARBOR – Dorothy E. King, 84, wife of 61 years to the late Eugene F. King, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 2, 2007, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born March 12, 1922, in North Ellsworth, the daughter of Ralph and Bessie (Wentworth) Maddocks. Dorothy was a longtime resident of Bar Harbor, Village of Eden, and a graduate of Ellsworth High School. After graduation, she attended nurses’ training in Portland, prior to her marriage to Eugene. World War II required their move to Florida, for his pilot’s training in the Army Air Corp and after assignment overseas, she returned home to Salisbury Cove to create a home and raise her children. Dorothy enjoyed working many years at The Colony Motel, Hulls Cove and made many friends with the camaraderie of her seasonal co-workers. She enjoyed maintaining a home, Mother’s Club, membership in D.A.R., time spent at the Green Lake camp, vegetable and flower gardening, square dancing, as a founding member of “The Acadian Bells & Buoys” and ballroom dancing whenever possible. In later years, she cherished her beloved cat, “Babe,” the occasional gathering of the ladies group, “Jersey Girls” and visits from the neighbors, friends and family. She is survived by her sons, Robert W. King and wife, Nancy E. (DeBeck), Lawrence F. King and wife, Nancy J. (Tilden), and Jeffery S. King, all of Ellsworth, David A. King and wife, Lisa S., of Gorham, and Douglas E. King and wife, Tracy T., of Orrington; a brother, Stephen Maddocks of Fairfield; and two sisters, Charlotte E. Wilson and husband, Robert, of Brockport, N.Y., and Alice M. Jordan and husband, Carroll, of Ellsworth; 10 grand children, eight stepgrand-children, five great-grand-children, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Ernest R. and Hazel Maddocks; and a sister-in-law, Betty Maddocks. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all of mom’s caregivers provided by Heart Works Home Referrals, MDI Hospital and Courtland Living Center, with extra recognition to Mabel Nelligan, Sandra Cody, Alma Thompson and special appreciation to Patty LaBombarde, a care provider and now, a dear family friend. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7.
