CALAIS – Dorothy M. (Christie) Berry passed away Aug. 6, 2006, less than six weeks after her 90th birthday. Dorothy was the wife of 60 years to the late Homer Berry. Two sons, a daughter and their spouses survive her. They are Peter and Gail Berry, summer residents of Roque Bluffs, John and Ora Preston of Jonesboro and Dale and Delores Berry of Brooksville, Fla. Dorothy was born June 10, 1916, in Milltown, New Brunswick, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Christie. She lived all except the last six months of her life in the border towns. To her family, which was the center of her life, she was a lady of charm and beauty, quick to love and equally quick to correct, a force to be reckoned with. She never forgot a birthday or an anniversary. All her grandchildren recognized the envelope with the elegant penmanship and knew it contained Xs and Os and a carefully folded bill. To her husband she was the Canadian queen and the head of the household. To family and friends they set an example of love, living, fortitude and responsibility for more than six decades. Dorothy loved watching her family flower and grow. She never lost her zest for ice-skating, her afternoon soap opera, or her eagerness to travel. In addition to her three children, Dorothy is survived by seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Trafton of Calais and Betty Laking of McAdam, New Brunswick; and a brother, Chester Christie of Milltown, New Brunswick. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Calais Cemetery. A reception will be held for all family and friends immediately after at the Calais Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Calais Methodist Church or the Downeast Community Hospital Chapel Fund, Machias.
