CUMBERLAND – Dorothy Newell Wagner, a resident of Cumberland for 54 years, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was the wife of the late George Washington Wagner. She was born Dec. 2, 1917, in Grafton, Mass., she was the daughter of E. Raymond and Nellie Look Newell. Dorothy grew up in Uxbridge, Mass and graduated from Uxbridge High School. She then attended Connecticut College where she graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1940. She spent her junior year abroad at Exeter University in England and had many happy memories of her time there. Later in life, Dorothy earned her masters in library science from the University of Southern Maine. She was the school secretary at Greely Institute and was then the librarian at Falmouth High School from 1960-1977. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and also served on the boards in both the Maine and New England Library Associations. She also served as a volunteer at Maine Medical Center. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Daughters of the American Revolution of Uxbridge, the Woman’s Literary Union, We Neighbors and the Unitarian Church of Uxbridge. She was an excellent correspondent and will also be remembered for her love of reading, nature, family and friends, especially little children. A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Dorothy will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her brother, Roger; and by her beloved son-in-law, Robert E. Newman. She leaves her daughters, Ellen Newell Call of Portland and Martha Ann Newman of Suffield, Conn.; and a very special friend, Jill Fox of Falmouth. She also leaves a brother and his wife, Gordon and Barbara Newell of Yarmouth-port, Mass.; three granddaughters, Ann Selvitelli and her husband, David, Amy Newman and Ellen Petrov and her husband, Denis, all of Suffield, Conn.; and three great- grandchildren, Nicholas and Hope Selvitelli and Mikhail Petrov. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the Falmouth Congregational Church. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the family cemetery in Addison.
