LEE – Douglas Palmer Griffin, 76, died peacefully June 26, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 26, 1930, in Kingman. He was the third child and first son of Palmer A. and Blanche H. (Boyington) Griffin. In his youth he lived in Kingman and graduated as valedictorian from Kingman Grade School. He also attended Lee Academy. He lived a number of years in Lincoln and East Millinocket as well. He retired June 30, 1970, as T/Sgt after 21 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, received the Bronze Star Medal at Binh Thuy Air Base, Vietnam, for meritorious service while engaged in military operations against Viet Cong forces. He was a member of the Pacific Air Forces, the nation’s combat-ready air arm guarding the 10,000-mile Bamboo Curtain. He worked at Great Northern Paper Co. as an instrumentation specialist, retiring May 1, 1992. He was well liked by all who knew him and will be missed by a great many people. He had a generous heart, a wonderful sense of humor and a knack for creating flower gardens that he’ll always be remembered for. He is survived by his four children and several grandchildren; Linda Schwab of Waterloo, Iowa; granddaughter, Shannon DeLeon and her husband, Erick and their daughter, Bella of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter, Stephanie Schwab and her son, Matthew, of Marion, Iowa; Christopher and his wife, Cristina, and their children, Rebekah, Jon and Jared of Fallbrook, Calif.; Karen Golden and her husband, James and their daughter, Samantha, of Lee; Steven of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Barbara Hoholick and her husband, Paul, of Hillsboro, Ohio, Gwendolyn G. Plourde of Old Town and Winnifred Surratt and her husband, Ronald, of Jacksonville, Ill. Doug also leaves behind his former wife and good friend, Mary Darlene Griffin of Bangor; a sister-in-law, Ida May Griffin of Howland; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by both parents; his brother, Gene; and his sisters, Betty and Joy-Emily. As per Doug’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.
