BANGOR – Dr. Robert M. Smith, 59, husband of Carole (Gagnon) Smith, died Nov. 19, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 22, 1946, in Bangor, the son of Richmond and Miriam L. (Morrison) Smith. Robert was a lifelong resident of Bangor and his education included an undergraduate degree from St. Anslem’s College, a master’s degree from Brown University and a doctorate from the University of Maine. He served as the academic dean and the dean of graduate studies for Husson College. Robert was a dedicated communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor, where he was a lector and past president of the parish council. He also served on the board of All Saints Catholic School. In addition to his mother of Bangor, Robert is survived by his wife of 34 years of Bangor, one daughter, Meaghan McAvoy and her husband, Oliver, of Brewer; a granddaughter, Amelia Kate McAvoy; one brother, Richmond Smith and his wife, Sylvia, of Bangor; one sister, Mary Louise Heinemann and her husband, Peter, of Needham, Mass.; nieces and nephews, David and Karen Smith, Robert Heinemann, Garth Cormier and Jennifer Barbour. He will be remembered by specials friends, Julian Haynes, Sonja Spring, and Maryann Haas. Family and friends may visit 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Robert M.
