NORWAY – Earl L. Batchelder, 62, beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005. He was born July 13, 1943, in Howland, to John and Ruby (Parker) Batchelder. He graduated valedictorian from Howland High School, and went on to receive his bachelors degree from Aroostook State Teachers College, in 1967, and later his masters degree from the University of Southern Maine. Earl went straight from school to teaching at what is now Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, where he remained a favorite math teacher to many for 37 years, until retirement in 2004. Earl married Susan Irons, in June of 1970, and was a loving husband and father to four children. His parents and his sister, Alice Wickett predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Susan; and their children, Jon Batchelder, Daelynn Morton and son-in-law, David Morton, James Batchelder and Dawnelle Sullivan, and son-in-law, Michael Sullivan. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joshua Richards, Tayla Batchelder, Kyler and Kaeleigh Morton and Declan Sullivan. His surviving siblings are Irene Chamberlain; brothers-in-law, Bob Chamberlain, Jean York, Paul Batchelder, sister-in-law, Reta Batchelder, David Batchelder and sister-in-law, Debbie Batchelder. Earl has several nieces and nephews that survive him as well. Earl very much enjoyed being outdoors camping, kayaking and was known for taking long walks. He will be sadly missed by his family and all those students, friends and neighbors whose lives he touched with that quick Yankee wit and dry sense of humor. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the First Congregational Church, 17 East Main St., South Paris, with the Rev. Donald Mayberry officiating. Reception to follow at church immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Oxford Hills Education Association, care of Oxford Hills High Comprehensive High School, 256 Main St., South Paris, ME 04281. The funds will then be applied to a mathematics scholarship in memory of Earl. Arrangements under the direction of Oxford Hills Funeral Services, 1037 Main St. RTE. 26, Oxford, ME 04270.
