ELLSWORTH and BREWER – Earl R. Hanscom Jr., 80, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, at his home in Brewer. He was born March 11, 1925, in Sedgwick, the son of Earl R. and Luetta (Bridges) Hanscom Sr. Earl was an Army veteran of World War II, and was a part of the Rhineland Campaign. For his service and wounds received in action, Earl was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with one bronze star, the Good Conduct Ribbon and the Purple Heart. When he returned home from his service, Earl graduated from Husson College, where he had studied accounting. In 1961, Earl married Marilyn Emery and they resided in Ellsworth. For many years, he worked at Hancock Wholesale Tobacco and eventually went to work for Peoples-Heritage Bank in Ellsworth, where he retired in the late 1980’s. After retiring from the bank, Earl worked for Town Auto Sales as a car salesman for a few years. Earl was active within the city of Ellsworth, serving on the Ellsworth School Board when Ellsworth was a member of School Administrative District No. 66. He was also a trustee of Ellsworth High School. Earl was a member of the Ellsworth Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member and past master of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM in Ellsworth, the Blanquefort Commandry, the Knight Templars and the Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor. Earl is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marilyn L. (Emery) Hanscom, of Brewer; three children, Diane Hanscom of Brewer, Elaine Brissette and her husband, Craig, of Culpepper, Va. and Kent Hanscom of Bangor; two sisters, Katherine Rainey of Fort Kent and Evelyn Linscott and her husband, Richard, of Lamoine; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Earl was predeceased by a brother, Orrin Hanscom. A Masonic funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the officers and members of Lygonia Lodge, officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Juniper Cemetery, Ellsworth.
