CORINTH – Earl Robert Estes, 78, died peacefully May 15, 2008, at his home. He was born July 27, 1929, in Smyrna Mills, the son of E. Herbert and Florence (Pond) Estes. He graduated from Merrill High School, Class of 1947. He received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and farm management from the University of Maine at Orono in 1951, where he was a member of the Agricultural Club and the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He served with the 517th Medical Co., U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He received a letter of commendation for the highest average, 99.4, ever achieved by any soldier of the Medical Soldier’s Course at that time. He retired in 2001 from his brokerage business, Aroostook Produce Inc., Houlton. He received the Maine Potato Board’s 2004 President’s Award in recognition of his service, friendship, long standing commitment and support to the potato industry. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Drosehn) Estes; and their five children, Bruce Estes and his wife, Diane, of Winterport, Michael Estes and his wife, Lynne, of Hermon, Robin Dewkett of Massachusetts, Scott Chaffee and his wife, Robin, of Glenburn, and Mark Estes of Minnesota; a brother, George Estes and his wife, Sandra, of New Hampshire; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Earl was predeceased by a brother, Carl; and a sister, Phyllis Hagan. Graveside services will be held for family and friends 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Corinthian Cemetery, Corinth, with Pastor David Lassell officiating. Those who wish may make donations in Earl’s memory to Corinth Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Fire Chief Scott Bragdon, 38 Black Road, Corinth ME 04427. Arrangements are in care of Thompson Funeral Home, 17 Hudson Road, Corinth.
