MILLINOCKET, KISSIMMEE, Fla., and PORTLAND – Edgar B. LaPlante, 82, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at a Portland health care facility. He was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Millinocket, the son of Edward and Florence (Carr) LaPlante. Edgar was educated in Millinocket schools and was a graduate of Stearns High School, Class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with two stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star. While serving in the Navy he traveled the world, serving on many ships and seeing much action. After the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Hazel A. Davis of Millinocket. Edgar and Hazel lived and worked in Bangor for a short time before returning to Millinocket. Edgar worked in the grinding room for the Great Northern Paper Co., for many years, and then left the mill and owned and operated the Montgomery Ward store on Penobscot Avenue until he sold the store and retired. After his retirement, Edgar and Hazel moved to Kiss-immee, Fla., where they lived for more than 20 years. Edgar was a member of Millinocket Baptist Church and Nollesemic Lodge No. 205, AF & AM. He also was an avid bowler and golfer, and a member of Hillcrest Golf Club, Millinocket. Edgar is survived by two sons, Bryant LaPlante of Cornville and his companion, Sylvia Cyr and Michael LaPlante and his companion, Esther Coyle, of Portland; four grandchildren, Shawn LaPlante and his wife, Andrea, Christopher LaPlante, Matthew LaPlante and Megan LaPlante; a brother, Robert LaPlante of California; a sister, Sally Jones of Veazie; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Kay LaPlante of Millinocket, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will also be missed by special friends, Mary Jamieson, Randy Bucknell and Linda Guy, all of Millinocket. Edgar was predeceased by his wife, Hazel A. LaPlante. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Millinocket Baptist Church, 297 Penobscot Ave., Millinocket with the Rev. Rudy Homchuck, interim pastor, officiating.
