ROBBINSTON and CALAIS – Edith Mildred Garland, 83, born Aug. 6, 1921, passed away peacefully May 30, 2005, at her home in Robbinston. Edith was born in Sebeka, Minn. She was educated in local schools around Sebeka and attended a business college in Washington, D.C. Along with her identical twin, Ethel, she worked for the war department in Washington. In 1946, Ede married her husband of 59 years, Arthur Garland. That same year, she accompanied him to Calais, and together they made their home on South Street until 1987. During this time, Ede worked for 41 years for the Maine Department of Labor. She retired in 1986. In 1987, she and Art moved to Robbinston and lived out their retirement years. Ede enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, spending time with Art at their camps at Beaver Lake and Enoch Brook. Ede was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, May 22, 2005; her parents, Guy and Mary Olsen, of Minnesota; and a brother, Gordon, of Minnesota; She is survived by a son, Peter Erik and his wife, Joyce; a daughter, Rebecca Olson and her husband, Bob, all of Robbinston; grandchildren, Dana, Erika, Tamara, Kari Anne, Tiffany, Peter, Jeremiah, Kristina, Shannon; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Anthony, Marquis and Elijah. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. McHugh, Sally Madson, Heidi Williams and Hospice volunteers for their personal care of Ede these past few months of her illness. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at a later date.
