ELLSWORTH – Edna S. Pullen, 87, died April 1, 2006, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Edna was born June 1, 1918, in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of Clarence W. Slater and Irene (Irwin) Slater. Edna graduated in 1936 from Crosby High School, Waterbury, Conn. and from Colby College in 1940, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. While at Colby she met her future husband, John S. Pullen. While he was in the service she taught at Lee Academy for one year where she was a dorm master. From there she moved to East Machias and taught at Washington Academy for a year. After her marriage April 22, 1943, they moved to Ellsworth where they raised their family. She taught English at Ellsworth High School from 1961-1971 with many years of substituting. Edna was a member of the First Congregational Church in Ellsworth, the Wednesdays Ladies group who enjoyed activities in the community, a life member of the Machias Chapter No. 83 OES, The Maine Education Association and a member of the Jaycee’s “Chambermaid.” She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed golf and bowling. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years; a son, Donald Pullen and his wife, Jaye, of Trenton; two daughters, Lynne Carlisle and her husband, Robert, of Brewer, Barbara Harmon and her husband, Albert, of Hancock; four grandchildren, Jay Fernald and wife, Casey, of Mount Desert, Stephanie Buzzell and husband, John, of Groveland, Mass., Michael Carlisle and wife, Joanne, of Boston, Mass. and Michelle Carlisle of Eddington; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Buzzell and Alexzander and Anna Fernald. She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Thompson. Friends are invited to call 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, with funeral services 2 p.m. at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Constance Wells of the First Congregational Church UCC of Brewer officiating. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery. Memorials in Edna’s memory may be made to the Ellsworth Alumni Assoc., Endowment Fund, care of Leah Allen, P.O. Box 122, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
