LIBERTY – Edward Herbert Janssen, 90, passed away peacefully Sept. 6, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta, after a short illness. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his daughters and grandchildren. Edward was born July 19, 1916, in Rosendale, N.Y., to Mattie von Borgen and Edward F. Janssen. He lived in New York until he shipped out with the merchant marines at the age of 17, as a cook’s helper on passenger ships. He was working on the Morro Castle when it caught fire off the coast of New Jersey and he was instrumental in saving some of the passengers in a lifeboat. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and worked on a fireboat until his discharge in 1945. He then was appointed as a New York City firefighter and worked in one of the busiest Hook & Ladder Co. in Lower Manhattan for 32 years. As a chief’s aide for the last few years, he assisted at the larger fires in New York City. He then retired to Lake St. George, Liberty, where he spent his summers. Ed married his outgoing Irish wife, Eileen Janssen and they honeymooned on Lake St. George. They had three children, Kerry, Michael and Patrice. Ed was very involved in coaching the swim and track teams while they were school age. He and his son, Michael, built his retirement home on the lake. He was a wonderful, involved father, teaching his kids and granddads to swim, fish, water ski and hunt; to believe in themselves and they could accomplish whatever they dreamed. Ed was an avid hunter and was proud of shooting a deer every year in either Maine or upstate New York and one year shot a bear. He was a life member of the American Rifle Association. He was also one of the founding members of the Citizens Association of Liberty Lakes and very active in the care and protection of the lake he loved. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen; his son, Michael; and his parents. Ed will be sorely missed by his daughters, Kerry Black and Douglas Black, Patrice Janssen and Bruce Williams; his grandchildren, Daniel Howe and Stella Howe, Joshua Howe and Carmel Howe, Leon Janssen, Kaitlin Janssen and fiance, Kevin Osborne and Luke Janssen; and great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Ryan and Alex Howe. Friends are invited to call 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. with Fa. Joseph Koury officiating. Interment will be after the service at the Hunt Memorial Cemetery, Liberty. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Citizens Association of Liberty Lakes, care of Linda Breslin, 451 Bassett Road, Winslow, ME 04901 or to the Liberty Fire Department, 84 West Maine St., Liberty, ME 04949.
