TUCSON, Ariz. – Edward Joseph Haggerty, 76, of Green Valley, Ariz., and Limington, died Feb. 3, 2008, at University Medical Center, after complications from open-heart surgery. Edward was born April 8, 1931, in Portland, the son of Edward J. and Agnes M. Haggerty. He graduated from Deering High School, Portland and received a Bachelor’s of Science from Gorham State Teachers College, and a master’s of edu-cation and a Certificate of Advanced Study of superintendancy from the University of Maine, Orono. His 36-year career in education began in Port-land and then quickly moved into administration as elementary supervisor of the Bonny Eagle school system, principal in Granby, Conn., and supervisor of elementary schools in Old Town. He was inherently generous to all and always gave more than he received. He enjoyed participating in golf and tennis groups in Green Valley and fishing and boating at his lake cottage in Maine. He was a long standing member of Rotary in Old Town, The New England Club of Green Valley and was a member of Old Town United Methodist Church and Valley Presbyterian Church of Green Valley. He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Elizabeth, whom he lovingly cared for during her fight with cancer. He is survived by his son, David of Los Angeles; his daughter, Jean Smail of Free-port; son-in-law, David Smail; precious grandsons, Nathan and John Smail; brother, Richard Haggerty and his wife, Julie, of South Portland; and sister-in-law, Nancy Perkins of South China. A celebration of Edward’s life will be held noon March 22 at South Freeport Church, 98 South Freeport Road. A reception will be held after at Jean Smail’s home, 10 Hemlock Creek, Freeport. In honor of Edward and his dedication to teaching, his family has founded a scholarship at Old Town High School for students heading to college, who have overcome a challenge to reach this goal.
