LUBEC – Edward J. Owen, 86, died Feb. 19, 2008, of complications from cancer. He was born July 14, 1921, in Milo, the son of Charles and Katherine (Murphy) Owen. After graduating from Milo High School, he attended Leland Powers School of Theater, Boston. He then went to work for WLBZ radio, Bangor, in 1942, in the days before television, where he remained for 35 years. Eddie began as an announcer, became a copywriter, sports broadcaster and eventually general manager. He then worked at WPBC, Bangor, for a number of years, and spent the last two years of his career at WDEA, Ellsworth. Eddie was probably most familiar broadcasting Bangor High School football and basketball and was twice voted Maine sportscaster of the year. He interviewed many people over the years, the great and near-great, including movie star, Veronica Lake; baseball great, Ted Williams; singer, Rosemary Clooney; and NBC anchor, David Brinkley. He was also a charter member of Bangor Community Theater. After retiring, he resided in Lubec where he took part in local theatrical productions, was an avid golfer and a volunteer at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse Visitors Center. He was married for 52 years to Wanda (Conley) Owen, who died in 1999. He is survived by his son, Marc C. Owen; daughter-in-law, Suzette Paes; and grandson, Andrew Paes Owen of Falls Church, Va.; and by son, John Owen of Lubec. A memorial service is planned in the spring.
