PORTLAND – Edward R. Halpin, 83, of Portland, formerly of Ferry Beach and Saco, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta. He was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Portland, the son of Edward A. and Susanna (Conwell) Halpin. He attended Butler Grammar School, and was a 1941 graduate of Thornton Academy. Edward went on to graduate from the University of Maine, Orono, with a bachelor’s of science in education. He was a third alternate for the Annapolis Naval Academy, but was drafted into World War II. Edward served in the Army in both France and Germany, and earned the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. In the early 1950’s, Edward began teaching in Brooks, at the Morse Memorial High School, where he stayed through 1964. Then, he taught at Richmond High School until the mid 1970’s, and at Searsport High School for a couple of years. He was a coach at every school he taught at. Edward was involved with Boys State for 30 years, was a life member of the DAV, and was a member of the American Legion Harold T. Andrews Post and the Richmond Post. He was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church in Old Orchard Beach. Edward is survived by his son, John Anthony Halpin of Westbrook; his sister, Ann Halpin Walker of Ferry Beach; a granddaughter, Vanessa A. Halpin of Watertown, Mass.; and grandnephews, Sean M. and Ryan J. Walker of Saco. Visiting hours will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret’s Church, Old Orchard Beach. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward’s name may be made to the Waldo County Little League, care of Mark Bennett, Treasurer, 283 Lang Hill Highway, Brooks, ME 04921.
