MATTAWAMKEAG – Edward T. McCafferty Sr., 98, went to be with his loving wife, Evelyn (Kilbride) McCafferty, Dec. 20, 2006, with his family at his side, at a Lincoln nursing home. He was born April 9, 1908, in Winn, the son of George and Suzan (Colford) McCafferty. Edward and Evelyn were married Christmas Eve in 1927 and celebrated 71 years of marriage, before her passing in September 1999. Edward worked as bus driver and custodian at Mattawamkeag Consolidated School for many years. He then went to work for the C-P Railroad and then the Maine Central Railroad, where he retired in 1970 as a motor patrolman, working as a track inspector. He is survived by three sons, Edward Jr. of Lincoln and Florida, Richard and his wife, Betty, of Lee and Florida and Douglas and his wife, Donna, of Mattawamkeag; a daughter, Virginia and her husband, Herbert Haynes, of Winn; 14 grandchildren, Dale McCafferty and Ann, Pam Wotton, Brian McCafferty, Cynthia Downs and Robert, Ginger Maxwell and Kevin, Jay Haynes and Annette, Barbara French and Malcolm, Ricky McCafferty and Toni, Michael McCafferty, Julie McCafferty, Douglas K. McCafferty and Candee, Scott McCafferty and Lisa, Robin Portwine and Mike and Todd McCafferty; 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Evelyn, he was predeceased by a baby daughter, Vivian; a grandson, Terral McCafferty; four sisters, five brothers; a daughter-in-law, Ione McCafferty. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Dec 29, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Carolyn Metzler officiating. Interment will be at East Winn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Mattawamkeag Community Pride.
